    In the ancient Slavs celebrated the New Year on the first day of spring - March 1, which has the new style for March 14. Celebrations took place well, because the new year has been a symbol of the beginning of the new era. From that day, it was possible to start a new cycle of field work, do other agricultural work.

    It is the most ancient of reliable and known celebration of the new year. After the adoption of Christianity this holiday was celebrated as the day of St. Martyr Eudocia, who took over in the spring (Vesennitsy).

    At the First Ecumenical Council of Nicaea in 325, it was decided to postpone the start of the New Year from March 1 to September 1.

    December 20, 1699 nominal decree of Peter I found that the New Year celebrations in Russia moved from September 1 to January 1.
